Sanskrit Name : Kumari
Latin Name : Aloe vera
Habitat : Cultivated throughout India.
Morphology: A Perennial plant with a short stem.
Leaves : 30-60 cm long,erect,crowded in a basal rosette,juicy,glaucous-green,
narrow,lanceolate,long acuminate,margins with spiny teeth.
Flowers : Yellow,in dense racemes terminating the scapes.
Juice : Fresh juice is obtained by crushing the white pulp of green leaves,
It is sticky liquid of golden yellow colour.
Dried juice : Aloes - solid mass of irregular shape and different sizes,dark chocolate
to black colour, surface hard,opaque with slightly vitreous appearance.
Flowers and Fruit : At the end of winter.

Aloe having 4 varieties

1)   Sacrotine : Imported from Zanzibar and ports of the Red sea.
2)   Arabian
3)   Jaffarabadi
4)   Maisuri

More than 50 species of Aloe it is noticed.
At present A.barbadensis,A.chinensis,A.Vera are mainly being used as Kumari.
