Sanskrit Name : Manjistha
Latin Name : Rubia cordifolio
Habitat : Found throughout India in hilly areas; now being cultivated at various places.
Morphology: It is perennial,herbaceous,climbing plant. Stems often many yards long,rough grooved.
Trunk : Square shaped and reddish.
Leaves : 6 to 12 cm long,in whorls of 4,ovate,acute,lower leaves are larger than the upper;base rounded or cordate;petioles triangular.
Flowers : yellowish white,in terminal panicied glabrous cymes;
branches chotomous,spreading;bracts leafy,colyx 0.85 mm long;
tubular,glabrous, Corolla-greenish,divided nearly to the base;
five lobed,ovate,acute 3 mm long. styles two;
stigma globose.
Fruit : White,fragnant,in solitary or fascicled,simple or branched racemes 2.5 - 5 cm long.
Fruit : 4-6 mm diameter,1.5 cm long,fleshy,globose,purplish black when ripen.
Root : reddish,long and thick.

Manjistha available in market is of 4 types

1)   Nepali
2)   Irani
3)   Afghani - best quality
4)   Hindustani - lower quality.

All the texts have delineated it as the herb useful to improve the colour and complexion of skin.

It is famous as Rakta sodhaka (blood purifier) in the traditional medicine.
