Sanskrit Name : Pippali
Latin Name : Piper longum
Habitat : Found in the hotter parts of India,from central Himalayas to Assam,Khasi and Mikir hills.
Also found in forests to western ghats from Kokan to Kerala.
Morphology: An aromatic slender climber.
Stems : Creeping,jointed,attached to other plants while climbing.
Leaves : 5-9 cm x 3-5 cm, subacute,entire,glabrous,cordate at the base.
Flowers : In pendulate spikes.straight;male larger and slender;female 1.3-2.5 cm x 4-5 mm diameter.
Fruits : Yellowish orange,aboid,sunk in fleshy spike.
Rhizome : 0.5 to 1 cm thick,sometimes branched in zigzag shape.Occassionally twisted,ash grey or earthy brown in colour.
Flowering : Rainy season.
Fruiting : Autumn.

2)   Raja Nighantu provides 4 varieties of Pippali Raja Nighantu

iii)   Simhali Pippali
iv)   Vana Pippali.

i)   Pippali - Which is found in Indian places like Magadh,Vidhena etc.
ii)   Gaja Pippali - It is an ambigious drug.Many people call Chavaka's fruit as gajapippali.
iii)   Simhali Pippali - This variety is imported from Sri lanka,Singapore and other foreign countries.
iv)   Vana Pippali - Grows in the jungles.It grows in abundance in Bengal. But it is small,slender,thin and less tikshna.
