Sanskrit Name : Manjistha Latin Name : Rubia cordifolio Habitat : Found throughout India in hilly areas; now being cultivated at various places. Morphology : It is perennial,herbaceous,climbing plant. Stems often many yards long,rough grooved. Branches - spread for a long distance. Trunk - square shaped and reddish. Leaves - 6 to 12 cm long,in whorls of 4,ovate,acute,lower leaves are larger than the upper;base rounded or cordate;petioles triangular. Flowers - yellowish white,in terminal panicied glabrous cymes;branches chotomous,spreading;bracts leafy,colyx 0.85 mm long;tubular,glabrous,Corolla-greenish,divided nearly to the base;five lobed,ovate,acute 3 mm long. Styles two;stigma globose. Fruit - 4-6 mm diameter,1.5 cm long,fleshy,globose,purplish black when ripen. Root - reddish,long and thick.
